A few hardly heard facts about the Fashion Industry:
1. Did you know some manufacturing companies use preservative formaldehyde which is applied to many clothes after the production process is over?. The role of formaldehyde is to prevent clothes from wrinkling and to prevent the formation of molds on clothes. Exposure to this chemical as a result of overconsumption of clothing items in fast fashion can cause severe allergic reactions.
In garments manufactured in China and Southeast Asia, investigators found 100 to 500 times higher levels of formaldehyde than the level which is considered to be medically safe for humans.
2. Did you know that one of the most polluting sectors in the world is the Fashion sector? All those clothes big companies can't sell, end up in landfills contaminating our planet. Fashion has become one of the biggest culprits contributing to climate change, accounting for 20% of wastewater and 10% of greenhouse gases emitted from human activity.
3. Did you know that women make up 80% of textile workers globally?. Most of these work many hours of overtime and get paid 5 times less than what a person actually needs to live with dignity.
Did you know that 60% of those who labor in the global fashion industry are children under the age of 18 years? child labor is one of the major fast fashion problems. This is how so many companies can have such low prices for their products manufactured overseas.
